Tee slept in our room until her third birthday, first in a crib sidecarred to my side of the bed (easy peasy night time feedings!), then in a toddler bed on the other side when Kay came along. I was so hyped when Tee moved into her own room the week after her third birthday. It felt like a little taste of freedom. After almost a year and a half in her own room though, she’s back.
It hit a high of 35 degrees (95 F) here yesterday and today, and at 8:30 pm it’s still 28 degrees (83 F). It simply isn’t possible for Tee to sleep in her sauna of a room. We only have one portable air conditioner and it’s set up in the master bedroom, so a couple of nights ago we moved her bed into our room at the foot of our bed. As far as Tee’s concerned, it’s like she never left. She brought all her stuffed animals with her, and her toys and books are starting to creep in too.
In this house with 4 bedrooms, the entire family including the dog is sleeping in one room. I swear I’ve caught the cat giving me the eye too, but I’ve got to draw the line somewhere, dammit! I’m allergic to cats. Isn’t it enough that the animals cover the rest of the house with their hair? I think I deserve some place safe from pet hair and dander!
When Tee first transitioned from our room into her own, I worked to celebrate her move to a “big girl” room by making her new room special with her own “big girl” furniture, fun jungle animal wall decals, and pictures she picked out herself on the walls. I’m a little worried that having had a taste of room sharing again, Tee’s not going to want to move back to her own room. I keep reminding her that she has her own room and she’ll be sleeping there again as soon as it cools down, but I don’t know if she takes me seriously.
At this point, I’m looking forward to the day I get my room and bed back, hopefully in a year or so. At almost two, Kay is still sleeping in here in her sidecarred crib. Depending on her development and maturity, I think it’s reasonable to hope she’ll be ready to transition to her own room around age 3, like Tee. For sure I’m not willing to have both kids in here long-term, so I’ll be holding firm on this. I mean it. Really.

I remember nights like these all too well from when my boy was small (stuffed animals and all). Eventually his independence kicked in and he wanted his own room.
Before you know it, you’ll get your room back lol
My baby girl is in our room as of now. In time she will have her own room. I just need to decide if I want to tough it out like I did with my boy, or do things differently so things happen sooner….just going with the flow for now.
This post sure brings back memories
I remember the summer months well, the heat and not being able to sleep and crowded into one room where the air conditioner was
I’ve been having the same debate. right now our almost 2 yr old sleeps in our room in her crib. I would love to have our room back! However, we have a 2 bedroom house and currently the other 3 munchkins share a room. In order to have all 4 share would mean trading rooms with them and that would be a big move! Hopefully before the end of the summer we’ll do the switch and have them all adjusted to sleeping in the same room. We would love to have separate rooms for the boys and girls but moving to a bigger house isn’t an option right now.
Lots of fun! Wait until both want to come in and then the dog too, if you have one. lol
Lol, that happens every once in a while, but I draw the line at the dog. She sleeps under the bed!
