It’s my most favourite time of the year! Yes, we’re getting ready for the holidays and planning plenty of events and outings, but I’m talking about Cirque du Soleil season in Vancouver. The artistry, the pageantry, the quirky stories, and, most of all, the performers’ extraordinary grace and athleticism have delighted audiences around the world for decades. For me, it’s been about 15 years and close to a dozen shows, most recently The Beatles LOVE at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.
Cirque du Soleil is back in Vancouver with its 35th production and most acclaimed touring show yet: KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities. Playing under the iconic blue and yellow Big Top at Concord Pacific Place, KURIOS will transport audiences into a fantasy world where anything is possible. In this realm set in an alternate nineteenth century, reality is relative and our perception of what’s real is utterly transformed.
In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a Seeker discovers that in order to glimpse the marvels that lie just below the surface, we must first learn to close our eyes.
In his larger-than-life curio cabinet, the Seeker is convinced that there exists a hidden world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. A collection of otherworldly characters suddenly steps into his makeshift mechanical world. When the outlandish, benevolent characters turn his world upside down with a touch of poetry and humor, his curios jump to life one by one before his very eyes.
Since its world premiere in Montreal in April 2014, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities has been racking up rave reviews everywhere it goes. I can’t wait to see this remarkably imaginative production, and neither should you!
